Behind the beaver that builds

Not everything here started pretty.

Some pieces were once crates, fence panels, or scrap.
This page shares the stories behind what I build -

where the wood came from, and how it found a second life.

If it’s here, it’s because I saw something in it — and thought maybe you would too.

The Beaver Box

The life after waste

It starts as a pile of mismatched pallet slats — some bowed, some split, some greyed with time.
I rip them straight, plane them clean, sand them down — and slowly, the box begins to take shape.
It’s not just a planter. It’s a way to keep useful wood from going to waste.
A place to grow something new inside something that’s already done its first job.

🐝 Mini Bug Hotels

Eco Friendly

This slat used to be part of a crate.
That bit? Came off a pallet from the docks.
The filler? Cut from last year’s garden canes.
Now? It’s a home. A hiding spot. A place for something small to rest.
I don’t build perfect things — I build useful ones. For the kind of nature that gets overlooked.

🖋 Chalkboard Signs

Changing Thoughts

Each chalkboard sign started as a pallet slat — usually split, dented, or kicked around at the bottom of the stack.
I cut them down, sand them smooth, and paint them by hand.
Nothing fancy. Just wood with one more job left in it.

Like something you see but want it a little different?
I’m always open to a good idea and a better use of old wood.
